How Much Does Garage Door Spring Replacement Cost?

A broken spring is the most common garage door repair. Here’s what actually changes the price, and how to make sure the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.

  • 24/7 emergency service
  • Same-day repairs
  • Upfront pricing

What changes the price of a spring replacement

  • Torsion or extension springs. Torsion springs (on the bar above the door) take more parts and labor than extension springs along the tracks.
  • One spring or two. Many double doors have two springs. Replacing both at once costs more today but saves a second visit soon after.
  • Door size and weight. Heavier doors, such as wide double doors, insulated doors and wind-rated doors, need larger, stronger springs.
  • Spring quality. Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. High-cycle springs cost more but can last twice as long, which pays off on a door you use many times a day.
  • Other worn parts. A snapped spring often damages cables, or reveals worn rollers and bearings. A good technician shows you these and lets you decide.
  • Time of day. Night, weekend and holiday emergency visits may carry an after-hours rate.

Watch out for the 19-dollar service call

A very low advertised service call is a common bait-and-switch in the garage door industry: the technician arrives cheap, then quotes a much higher price for parts you may not need. Protect yourself:

  • Ask for the total price — parts, labor and trip — before any work starts.
  • Ask which springs are being installed and what cycle rating they have.
  • Check that the company is licensed and has real local reviews.
  • Keep the old springs if you want to see the break yourself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to replace one spring or both?

Replacing one is cheaper today, but on a two-spring door the other spring is the same age and usually breaks soon after. Replacing both together avoids a second service visit and keeps the door balanced.

Can I get an exact price over the phone?

We can give you a close estimate if you tell us the door size and text a photo of the springs. We confirm the exact total on site before any work begins.
